Street Symphony
Hanoi Vietnam
November 2003
At the invitation of the British Council in Vietnam I was offered the chance
to create a temporary work in Hanoi in collaboration with local artists and
musicians.
The project used recordings of street calls from Hanoi, arguably very banal
sounds to the resident, almost invisible in their familiarity, but to the outsider
something very unique and special. One day they will simply be just memories,
when they are no longer seen and heard on the streets, so in many ways the work
was about storing the resonances and ghosts for a future generation.
Having recorded and rehearsed for several days we presented the work in the
Opera House to a very receptive audience.
In actual fact I was the first ever electronic artist from overseas to perform
in Hanoi. It was an extraordinary experience.
